I. Amazon Further Emphasizes Physical Testing Requirements for Mattresses

According to the latest reminder published on the Amazon Seller Forums, the latest explanation of Amazon’s mattress safety policy is available here:

https://sellercentral.amazon.com/seller-forums/discussions/t/9f55be42-2e92-47b7-ad02-99cff1a72b94

Mattress products sold in the U.S. store must comply with the following main safety and compliance requirements:
1. 16 CFR Part 1632 cigarette ignition resistance testing for mattresses;
2. 16 CFR Part 1633 open-flame testing for mattresses and mattress sets;
3. General-use mattresses must provide a GCC, namely a General Certificate of Conformity;
4. Children’s mattresses usually must provide a CPC and comply with relevant CPSIA requirements.

Among these requirements, Amazon specifically emphasizes that compliance with 16 CFR 1633 cannot be verified solely through material declarations, historical documents, or calculation-based assessments. Products must undergo physical open-flame testing. After testing is completed, sellers are usually required to submit compliant test reports together with supporting documents such as a GCC or CPC.

Compliance Status and Certificates Must Be Continuously Maintained
According to Amazon’s current reminder:
1. The product compliance verification status is valid for three years from the date of approval;
2. GCC or CPC documents are valid for one year and must be updated annually;
3. Certificates should include product identification information, applicable safety rules, manufacturer or importer information, test date, test location, and laboratory information;
4. Missing or expired documents may result in the relevant ASINs being automatically restricted or removed.

What Does 16 CFR 1633 Mainly Evaluate?
16 CFR Part 1633 is used to evaluate the size of the fire generated when a mattress or mattress set is exposed to a specified open-flame ignition source. The test uses top and side burners to apply specified propane flames to the specimen, while the heat release rate is continuously measured using oxygen-consumption calorimetry.

The mattress specimen must meet both of the following key acceptance criteria:
1. During the 30-minute test period, the peak heat release rate must not exceed 200 kW;

2. The total heat release during the first 10 minutes after the start of the test must not exceed 15 MJ.

The standard requires the calorimetry system to be calibrated at a minimum of two points: 75 kW and 200 kW. The specified flow rate for the top burner is 12.9 L/min, and the specified flow rate for the side burner is 6.6 L/min. During the standard test, the side burner operates for 50 seconds, while the top burner operates for 70 seconds.
In addition to the final test results, 16 CFR 1633 also requires records to be retained, including the test facility, environmental conditions, peak heat release rate, total heat release during the first 10 minutes, test curves, and videos or photographs taken at specified time points.

II. TESTech Furniture Large-Scale Calorimeter Supports Mattress Open-Flame Testing

The TESTech Furniture Large-Scale Calorimeter is designed in accordance with the relevant test requirements of 16 CFR Part 1633-2017 and is used to determine the fire response performance of mattresses and related products under specified open-flame exposure.

The system mainly includes:
1. A combustion test area and mattress support device;
2. Top and side propane burners;
3. A smoke collection hood, smoke sampling ducts, and an exhaust system;
4. A spray tower and smoke treatment device;
5. Oxygen, carbon dioxide, and carbon monoxide gas analysis systems;
6. Optical measurement, data acquisition, and test software;

7. Gas circuit control, electrical control, and emergency stop devices.

The equipment supports gas analyzer calibration, optical system calibration, heat release rate calibration at 75 kW and 200 kW, and real-time test data acquisition. It can provide equipment support for mattress manufacturers in product research and development, structural screening, factory quality control, and the establishment of laboratory testing capabilities for 16 CFR 1633.

As Amazon further strengthens its review of mattress compliance documentation, physical testing, and ASIN-level verification, mattress companies need to move compliance work forward to the product design and mass-production stages. Through standardized open-flame testing, clear model management, and a continuously updated documentation system, companies can reduce the risks of ASIN restrictions, repeated testing, and delays in product launches.
